Prevention and long-term management of angina pectoris (chest pain) due to coronary artery disease.
Nitroglycerin is an organic nitrate which releases nitric oxide, leading to vasodilation. It reduces myocardial oxygen demand by lowering both preload and afterload, improving blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart.
Typically, 2.6 mg once or twice daily. Dosage should be individualized based on patient response and as directed by a registered physician.
Take orally with water. Do not chew or crush. Preferably take at the same time daily for consistent effect.
Severe hypotension may result if taken with phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, vardenafil). May interact with antihypertensive drugs, alcohol, and beta-blockers.
Hypersensitivity to nitrates, severe anemia, increased intracranial pressure, recent myocardial infarction with low filling pressure, and concurrent use with PDE5 inhibitors.
Common: Headache, dizziness, flushing, and hypotension.
Rare: Fainting, nausea, tachycardia, and allergic reactions.
Should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Caution advised during lactation as data on safety is limited.
Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent rebound angina. Use with caution in patients with low blood pressure, dehydration, or volume depletion. Do not consume alcohol during treatment.
