Used to treat partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, trigeminal neuralgia, and neuropathic pain.
Carbamazepine stabilizes the inactive state of sodium channels in neurons, decreasing excitability and preventing seizure spread.
Usually prescribed 400 mg once or divided doses daily. Dose is adjusted based on clinical response and plasma levels.
Take orally with food to minimize gastrointestinal irritation. Tablets should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing.
May interact with enzyme-inducing drugs, warfarin, oral contraceptives, and other anticonvulsants affecting metabolism.
Hypersensitivity to Carbamazepine, bone marrow suppression, and acute intoxication with CNS depressants.
Common: Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision.
Serious: Aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Use cautiously during pregnancy; potential fetal harm. Excreted in breast milk; breastfeeding requires medical advice.
Monitor blood counts and liver function regularly. Avoid abrupt discontinuation. Use cautiously in cardiac and hepatic impairment.
Anticonvulsants
